If you feel like the world has somehow gotten crazier since we last spoke, I can assure you, you’re not alone. But despite the whirlwind of events that turn around us, dragging everything into their chaos, a light in the storm remains:
Stories.
I, personally, believe that the act of reading (and writing for that matter) is a political one. What you choose to consume not only impacts your way of thinking, potentially opening you to new ideas, but is also an act of support for the person who wrote it—you are spending something of yours to do so, after all, whether that be your money, your time, or your effort.
But even if you don’t agree with me on that point, there is another where I think we can come to an accord: stories are the ultimate escapism—always available to all, no matter their circumstances in life. And sometimes you just need to take a little fictional vacation.
So, if you also believe, as I do, that reading is political, I’d first like to thank you for spending your time here with me and these authors. I’d then like to encourage you, in this moment of political unrest, to continue to read and support those who write—those who bare their truth on the page in the hopes of connecting with another human being—even if only with your time.
And if you’re only looking for a fleeting moment where you can forget the real world and immerse yourself in romance, adventure, fright, and maybe a friendly robot or two, I say you are welcome as well! Sometimes we all need to get away from reality for a bit.
But I’d suggest that while you’re out on your sojourn, you take a peek at the deeper message the author is trying to tell.
It might be the light you’re looking for.
